Enjoyable because of its quirky, quiet tone and humor was the TV show of the 50s, "Meet Mr. Peepers." At least I think it was so entitled. I remember, with fondness still, enjoying it when I was in the 6th grade.

Wally Cox was the title role. I wonder what ever happened to him. If you watched the show, you will remember one of the running scenes when Peepers went through a series of maneuvers to open his locker, using a yardstick and knowing where to kick an adjacent door to make his locker door pop open. The mild-manners Mr. Peepers was not like any of the science teachers we had at Rogers - certainly the opposite of the rough-and-ready Mr. Sabo I eulogized last month when I received word of his death.

Tony Randall, who played a role as a fellow teacher, was a regular. He went on to doing other performances on TV, most notably Felix in "The Odd Couple." I don't remember her name, but the confused woman, English teacher, Mrs. Guerney was my favorite. She did so well playing the befuddled, time-to-retire elderly teacher that reminded me of several teachers I had who resembled her. If you remember the scene in the Dustin Hoffman classic, "The Graduate", you may have recognized Mrs. Guerney as the same confused, befuddled, stammering character who was at the wedding in the hotel where Hoffman, as Ben, stumbled into a reception and posed as a guest, going through the receiving line.

I doubt that a show such as "Mr. Peepers" would ever get past the pilot stage today. For whatever reason, perhaps the same as would be the case still, it was too slow-paced, too subtle in humor, not sexy enough for TV, being only about a mild-mannered school teacher. There were other shows about teachers, who were usually hero types. Peepers was more like most teachers. Maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much.
