Operation Scholarship Success at Rogers HS
Rogers high school has put in
force a plan to try to raise student interest in academic achievement.
The Project by which it is
hoped this interest will be created is called Operation Scholarship.
This year’s effort toward
the success of the operation is a contest among homerooms to increase
the academic standings.
Homerooms having the highest
geade point averages in each of the four grades receive a plaque which
remains in their particular room during the six weeks period for which
they have excelled over their competitors. These plaque awards are to
circulate to the winning homerooms each six weeks and will then remain
in the rooms which succeed in attaining the highest overall grade point
average for the entire school. term.
Plaque to Rotate
Another phase of the contest
is the presentation of a plaque representing the greatest improvement
during each six-week period. It will rotate also, and then becomes the
permanent property of the room showing the most improvement during the
year.
Winner of the highest grade
average in the school for the second six weeks was a senior girls’
class while a boys’ freshman homeroom made the greatest improvement.
James J. Elsensohn, assistant
principal, said, “I am surprised at the tremendous interest that this
competition has aroused. It is the most successful single thing we’ve
done the “Operation Scholarship” program.
Club Tabulates Grades
The success of the plan
depends mainly on the ability of homeroom teachers and officers to build
enthusiasm among their class members for the project.
Members of the Senior Math
club have the responsibility of tabulating all the homeroom grade
averages.
A cabinet in the main hall of
the school is used to show displays of work done by students in various
classes to increase interest in the subjects by the students.
Another phase of the plan is
the National Merit Scholarship tests.
A total of 138 seniors from
Rogers participated in the tests, which gave valuable knowledge of
abilities and chances for success in college to each individual.
The Rogers Record, student
newspaper, takes special notice to keep students informed of the
scholarship possibilities in its bi-weekly issue. Notices are sent to
homerooms to further remind students of available scholarships. |
