Most commercial jingles do not have a soothing quality. But, if a dog food commercial does, something gentle and almost lovingly sweet, it makes sense. You would understand if you have ever been in love with a dog.
To think that Spokane’s own Doctor Ross, a real veterinarian with an office on east Sprague in the Valley, could have such a catchy jingle. The tune is clear in my mind. The words are intact:
“Feed him Doctor Ross dog food
and do him a favor.
It’s got more meat and it’s got
more flavor.
It’s got more meat to make him
feel the way he shoooo-ould,
Doctor Ross dog food is dog-gone
good.
Woof!
Fido knows best.
Woof!
Fido knows best.”
The screen showed a cartoon image of a floppy-eared dog.
We had a dachshund, Fritz, who needed some medical attention. My mom didn’t know where to take her, but for reasons I don’t recall she chose to go out to Dr. Ross’s place. It was his home, his examination room being where the front room had existed. I don’t recall why my mom left unsatisfied with the treatment. I also don’t recall why she left with a can or two of his dog food product. I do remember the visit was after hours, dusk, there was no receptionist, no other pet patients. There’s a lot I don’t remember, but I sure remember the ad. Now that’s a real CommClassic!
I wonder if they sold Doctor Ross Dog Food east of the Mississippi. Whenever a product was sold on both sides of the Mississippi, it was considered national, big time product.
