Let’s recall a few jingles and slogans from our childhood and teenhood that center on grooming products and cleaning products. Remember the following Dial Soap jingle?
She likes people;
people like her.
And people who like
people like Dial.
The Mr. Clean commercial persisted into recent times. Maybe it’s still current. Is it?
Mr. Clean gets rid of
dirt, grime, and grease in just a minute.
Mr. Clean will clean
your whole house and everything that's in it.
Remember Duz Detergent? I don’t recall a jingle, but I remember their slogan:
Duz does everything.
The Ajax Cleanser commercial had a driving beat and alliterative use of the word “boom.”
Use Ajax, boom, boom,
the foaming cleaner, boom-a-boom-boom-boom;
Washes dirt, right
down the drain, boom-a-boom-a-boom- boom.
The White Rain Shampoo commercial carried over from radio to television:
White Rain, White
Rain;
Use new White Rain
Shampoo tonight,
and tomorrow your hair
will be sunshine bright.
One of my favorites was the Halo Shampoo commercials. I recall them from classic radio well into the television era of our Rogers years. This shampoo contained no soap, but it yielded a rich lather. In the old, old days, people rinsed their hair with vinegar or lemon to remove the shampoo gunk. Halo, on the other hand claimed:
“Soaping” dulls hair. Halo glorifies it. To this end, their jingle was:
Halo, Everybody, Halo.
Halo is the shampoo
that glorifies your hair
So Halo, Everybody,
Halo…..
Music stopped; announcer hyped Halo. Then ..
So Halo, Everybody,
Halo.
Halo Shampoo, Halo!
Many famous singers had a turn at the Halo jingle. They include Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Eddie Cantor, and, believe it not, Spike Jones! Whatever happened to Halo Shampoo, anyway?
